How to Connect to a Windows Server Remotely

Depending on the operating system you are using locally, the way to remotely connect to a Windows server is different. This article will introduce how to connect to Windows servers from Windows, Linux, MacOS, mobile devices, and other remote control software.

Prerequisites

You already get the server login credentials
Once your server is deployed, the login credentials are usually sent to your registered email. You can also get server login information, including IP, Login Name, Login Password, and Access Port in the Database Mart control panel, please refer to guide on how to manage servers in Database Mart control panel.

How to Connect to a Windows Server Remotely

Connect from Windows
Regardless of whether you are using Windows Server, Windows 7 or Windows 10 locally, the most convenient way to connect to a Windows server from a local Windows computer is an RDP connection. RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is a protocol used to access computers remotely. It allows users to connect to a remote computer over a network and use the remote computer's desktop environment on the local computer. RDP was originally developed by Microsoft and integrated into the Windows operating system. Therefore, the Windows operating system comes with an RDP client. 1. Open RDP on local computer

Enter Remote Desktop or RDP in the search box on the taskbar, and then click Remote Desktop Connection.

2. At Database Mart, VPS uses port 1097, while dedicated servers use port 1098. To connect to Windows server at DBM, fill in the IP address followed by a colon then the port number. For example: 108.1.1.1:1097. Then click Connect in the lower right corner.
3. Enter credentials to create a remote connection

Enter the Login Name and Login Password used to log in to the server. To make it easier to log in next time, you can check "Remember me". Then click OK below to create the remote connection. A window that cannot verify the identity of the remote server may pop up. You can check the Don't ask me again for connection to this computer option and click Yes to connect to the remote server.

Connect from Linux
To create a Linux to Windows, you can utilizing the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). There are numerous linux remote desktop clients, such as Remmina, Anydesk, Teamviewer, and rdesktop. Connect from Mobile Devices
Regardless of whether you are using an iOS or Android mobile device, you can log in to the Windows server through the RDP client (RD Client), allowing you to manage your Windows server anytime, anywhere. There are various RDP clients on the market for these two systems. Here we take the iOS system connecting through Microsoft Remote Desktop as an example.
1. Download Microsoft Remote Desktop (RD Client) from the App store
2. Create a server profile
2.1 Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop client. Click the + sign at the bottom of the screen, then click Add PC.
2.2 Click on the PC name field.
2.3 Fill in the IP or IP:port of the remote server, and then click Return in the upper left corner.
2.4 Click the User Account field > Add User Account.
2.5 Fill in the login username and password, and hit save.
2.6 Now you should go back to the Add PC page and press Save.
3. Connect to a remote Windows server
Click on an added PC to create a connection.
4. Disconnect from a remote Windows server
Click the icon in the middle, then click the cross icon in the upper right corner to disconnect from the server.
Connect to a Windows server using remote control software
Besides the above methods, you can also use remote control software to connect to a Windows server. However, it requires TeamViewer installation on both participating machines. The remote control software is a powerful tool that’s often compatible with an array of platforms like: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. It permits users to create online meetings, transfer files, desktop sharing, and more. There are many remote control software, such as AnyDesk and Teamviewer.
