How to Extend a Partition After a Windows Server VPS Disk Upgrade

Applicable Scenario

If you have already upgraded your plan or increased the disk size from the control panel, the virtual disk capacity of your Hyper-V VPS has been expanded. At this point, in the Windows Server Disk Management, you may see that the total disk capacity has increased, but the existing partition has not yet used the newly added space.

To actually use this additional capacity, you need to manually extend the partition inside Windows Server. This article describes the specific steps.

Important Notes:

• Make sure you extend the correct disk and partition to avoid affecting other data disks.
• If the Extend Volume option is grayed out and unavailable, please refer to the FAQ at the end of this article first. Do not use unknown third-party partition tools at will.
• If your partition format is not the same as described in this article, please contact support to add it manually.

Steps

1. Open Disk Management

Inside the VPS, right-click the Start menu and select Disk Management.

Alternatively, open Run and type diskmgmt.msc.

2. Confirm the Newly Added Space

In Disk Management, you will see that the corresponding disk capacity has increased, for example, from 60GB to 100GB. The newly added portion is usually shown as an unallocated black area.

3. Extend the Target Partition

Locate the partition you want to extend, usually the C drive. Right-click the partition and select Extend Volume.

4. Complete the Extend Volume Wizard

In the Extend Volume Wizard, simply click Next. The system will usually select all available unallocated space automatically. Confirm and click Finish.

5. Verify the Result

Return to Disk Management and confirm that the target partition capacity has increased. You can also open This PC to check whether the total capacity of the C drive has been updated.

FAQ

1. What should I do if "Extend Volume" is grayed out?

Common reasons include:

• The unallocated space is not to the right of the partition;
• The partition is not in NTFS format;
• The disk is MBR and has reached the 2TB limit;
• BitLocker is enabled or other special configurations exist.
